One Month Later

"The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy." - Psalm 126:3

Although we have only been home one month, it feels like we have been a family forever. Maya fits in so well with our family, and she brings us so much joy. We've had a busy month, but its been a blessed one. In only a months time we have celebrated Halloween, Maya's birthday and Thanksgiving! She probably thinks America is one big party! We are so excited to be able to celebrate these special times with her.

This Thanksgiving was very humbling for us as we had so much to be thankful for. We celebrated the Thanksgiving weekend with family, and it was truly one of the best weekends we have ever had in our life. Maya has such a beautiful heart, and she brings joy to everyone she meets. We're not sure who enjoyed Thanksgiving more....her, us, or our family. We all had a great time finally being together to celebrate the holidays.

We are amazed everyday at how much she is progressing. In only a months time her walking and speech have both improved, as well as her gross and fine motor skills. Her motor skills have gotten so much better that she has even learned how to play the abc song on the piano! We were shocked at how quick she learned it! She is also picking up new words in English everyday. She quickly picked up important words like chocolate, ice cream and lollipop! Lol. But in all sincerity, there is one word that she says that truly does melt our hearts. This word is an accumulation of all of your prayers and support. This word is the reason why we spent 2 1/2 long years trying to adopt, and sacrificed so much to get her home. This one special word is Jesus. And when she says his name, her face lights up. She understands his love for her, and she loves him so much in return. It is a beautiful and humbling sight. No longer an orphan, she is wrapped in her Father's love, and also lavished with love by her forever family. Our hearts are overflowing with the Saviors goodness and love. To God be the glory for the great things He has done. 

And Then There Were Three!

Words can not express how happy we are right now. We are finally home, and our family is united. What a tremendous blessing. We are all still getting over jet lag, but Maya is doing great! She is the perfect fit for our family. She loves being a part of a family, and gets so excited about everything. She is the happiest kid we have ever seen.

Its been a long and difficult journey, but we would do it all over again. It was worth everything we had to endure to get her home. We've only been home for a week, but it feels like we have been a family forever. The best things in life truly are worth waiting for.

Thank you so much to everyone who has helped us on this journey. We never knew life could be this good.

One Week Away!!!

Its been a busy few weeks as we have been getting things ready to travel. We've been cleaning, packing, getting shots, and doing all that we can to get ready for our trip. We still can't believe that next Thursday we will be in China, and a few days after that we will finally get to meet Maya! Wow! So exciting!! Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we prepare to become a family. We'd really love it if you could specifically pray for safe travels, and for Maya to bond quickly with us. This is going to be such a big change for her, and we pray that God will help her (and us) adjust quickly. This long journey is almost over, and a new journey as a family is about to begin! We can't wait!

We're Going to China!!!!

We were just notified that we are scheduled to arrive in China on October 10th!!! Woohoo!!! At last, our long wait is coming to an end! In a little over 30 days we will be united as a family! Maya will no longer be an orphan, but will officially be our daughter! That is music to our ears! Thank you all for hanging in there with us on this long journey! At times it felt like this day would never come. Your encouragement and support has helped us so much. We can't wait for you to meet Maya next month! 

China Fees Fully Funded!!!!

The last two weeks have been really big for us as far as fundraising goes. Not only were we featured on Give 1 Save 1 Asia, but our wonderful friends and family also did a fundraiser for us. The money generated from these two events allowed our China fees to be fully funded!!!! What a HUGE relief, and an incredible blessing! All we have left to pay now is our travel fees, and we will be able to bring Maya home! Wow! We wanted to thank each of you who supported us during these fundraisers. We were amazed by your generosity, and we are truly grateful for your help in bringing our little girl home.

Give 1 Save 1 Asia

The first time we heard about Give 1 Save 1 Asia, we fell in love with their concept! Their goal is to have everyone donate $1 a week to support orphan care. Each week they feature a different adoptive family, organization, or orphanage. Its so simple and cost effective for everyone, yet if everyone gave $1 it could have a HUGE impact! We've been following their blog for the past 4 months, and we have been so encouraged by all of the families they have featured. This week, we are so honored to be their featured family! Three Incredible Days of Blessings!

" And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek Him."- Hebrews 11:6

For about a month, we've had nothing to report. Its just been a lot of waiting.... a whole lot of waiting. But this week, we had three blessings in a row! On Monday, we received a matching grant from Lifesong for Orphans. On Tuesday, we received a matching grant from Hand in Hand Christian Adoption.....and today.... we received a grant from Bethany Christian services! Wow! We are blown away by God's incredible goodness! If we can raise $5,000 to go towards our matching grants, we will be almost fully funded! Just writing that makes us excited! What an incredible blessing! We are standing in amazement today of the mighty God that we serve.

A Few Updates

We've had a few updates since our last post!

1. We received notification that Maya's package made it to her orphanage! Yay! We hope that they have already given it to her, and that she now knows she is part of a family!
2. We received notification that they are processing Maya's visa. Once that is done, things will move super fast!
3. We have been in contact with the travel agency and they are working on our travel arrangements! Although we don't have a date yet, there are lots of things they have to get together in the meantime. (Arranging our hotel stay in multiple cities, preparing to book us on the 7 or 8 flights that we will be taking, etc. ) In the mean time we will be getting ready as well. (Getting multiple shots, finishing up final documents, etc)

Mark Schultz's Heart for Adopting Kids with Special Needs

This 1 minute video clip reminded us of why we are advocating for kids with special needs to be adopted. Every kid deserves to be loved, even if it is for just a short time. We hope this video will encourage each of you who have supported us. We also hope it reminds you of how important you have been in helping us bring the love of family to a child who probably would have never experienced it otherwise.

China's Language, Travel, and an Ultrasound!

You don't exactly get an ultra sound when you are adopting, so the photo above is as close as we are gonna get! :) We thought it was appropriate as we are discussing all things China today.

We've gotten lots of questions about our adoption, and we always enjoy talking to people about our journey. We've been so blessed to have gotten to know people from all over the world throughout our adoption process. As cultures are different, we've gotten a lot of culture and China related questions. We thought we would answer some of them here.

1. Does Maya speak English? Although she is learning a few words in English, Maya mainly speaks Mandarin.
2. Do you speak Mandarin? We have been trying to learn Mandarin. We emphasize the word trying, as it is an incredibly challenging language, and it has definitely been an uphill battle to learn.
3. Can you say something in Mandarin? Below are a few common words with their Mandarin translation.
Hello- Ni hao (pronounced- Knee how)
Thank you- Xie Xie Ni (pronounced She-ay She-ay Knee)
Goodbye- Zai jian (pronounced Dzai gee- en)
4. Do you have to travel to China to get Maya? Yes, we are required to travel to China to get Maya and finalize our adoption.
5. How long will you be in China for? We will be in China approximately 14 days.
6. How long is the flight to China? Longer than we want to think about! :)

AIDS and the Orphan Crisis

For those of you who know us, you know that one of our deepest desires is to find homes for orphans with special needs.  Right now, the AIDS pandemic is creating a large number of orphans around the world, and has become one of the largest crisis's of our time. "According to UNICEF (2011), there are 153 million orphans worldwide. It is accurate to say that millions of these children are living with HIV. Without a family to care for them, their risk of death is inevitable. Their deaths could have been prevented."- hivaidsinitiative   Due to medical advancements, children who receive treatment are expected to live a normal lifespan. The term Lazarus Effect is given to people with HIV who receive the medicine they need. It is called the Lazarus Effect because people who were once on the brink of death are restored to health. Unfortunately, orphans in third world countries do not have access to these life saving medicines. "In 2011, in the United States, only about 9,000 people adopted from other countries, and tragically, of that small number who adopted, only a handful of children living with HIV were adopted. Families report that stigma, fear, myths and ignorance keep them from adopting children who are living with HIV." -hivaidsinitiative One of our goals is to help change that stigma. Below are a few quick facts from Project Hopeful's website that might change your views on adopting a child with HIV/AIDS. 

- HIV has never been transmitted in a normal family living environment.
- You NEVER have to fear contracting HIV through casual contact with an HIV+ person.
- With medication, HIV can be effectively managed to the point that the virus is undetectable in laboratory tests.
- All around the world, orphans are overlooked for adoption because of their HIV+ status.
- Medications called ARVs can mean the difference between life and death.

Singer Toby Mac's Adoption Journey

Toby Mac is about more than just music. He has a heart for God, family and adoption. In 2002, Toby and his wife adopted twin boys Moses and Marlee. "The couple views the adoption as a God-ordained process rather than a calculated decision. They were praying for another pregnancy and even asking God for twins. A woman they didn't know approached them at church and asked if they'd ever considered adopting. She knew of some twins soon to be born who needed adoptive parents. The McKeehans took it as an answer to prayer and began the adoption process for the African-American twins. "It was so beautiful, there's no denying it," Toby says."

A few years ago Moses was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. "It's opened my eyes to things I never saw before, to have a son in a wheelchair full time," Toby says."We're trying to love that guy with everything we've got and trying to let him experience everything he's supposed to experience..."

Toby and his family are striving to help Moses live life to the fullest. Care Package In Route To China!

Today we were informed that we can finally send Maya a care package! This was joyous news to us as this also means that she will soon find out she has a family! Although we have known about her for over a year, she will be finding out about us for the first time! We are delighted that she will soon know that she is no longer an orphan. She will soon know that is she loved, valued, and part of a family!!!! It warms our hearts just thinking about it!

We had such a fun time getting her care package together. Just the thought of being able to finally give her a gift was incredible! We sent her a recordable photo album with lots of pictures of us, our family, etc. to get her acclimated to us. We also sent her a Build a Bear, a book, a Barbie doll (we are told that is her favorite toy), and a pink blanket. We recorded the Build a Bear and photo album in English and Mandarin. As we are just learning Mandarin, we hope and pray that she can decipher what we are saying! Our agency also suggested that we send a disposable camera for her to take pictures. As she has probably never held a camera before, we can't imagine how those pictures are going to turn out! Even if she takes pictures of feet, walls, or other random things, we will love them simply because she took them. :)

Introducing Maya Hope!!!

We just had our LOA approved, and we are now waiting on our travel dates!!! Yippee!! We are so excited to finally be at this last step! It has been a long journey, but soon our little girl will be home. As our LOA is approved, we can now share pictures and a little information about her. We are thrilled to introduce you to Maya Hope. Maya is a precious little girl from China who has Cerebral Palsy. Although she has Cerebral Palsy, she is very strong and makes great effort to finish every new rehabilitative learning task. Like most little girls, she likes to play house, play hide and go seek and play with barbie dolls. She has a great attitude and gets along well with other children. She has stolen our hearts, and we can't wait to bring her home. As our adoption has now been moved up, we are in need of the remainder of the adoption fees to bring Maya home. We would be very grateful if you would join us in our journey to get Maya home. Your donation will help us finalize our adoption, and make one less orphan in the world. Life Rolls On

Every since we found out we would be adopting a child with special needs, we have been on a mission of sorts. It has been our goal to equip ourselves with all of the education and resources we need to help make our little girl's life all that God intended it to be. We have come across tons of great resources, and we have been amazed at the incredible people we have met. We have met so many families who have children with special needs. These families, and the many organizations that support people with disabilities, have truly taken us under their wing. They have equipped us, and supported us. They showed us that they are not just a community, but a family. A family that we are delighted to now be a part of. But most importantly, they have showed us that our daughter can truly live life to the fullest. Because of these parents and their precious children, we have learned not to take life for granted, but to savor every moment. We have learned to find joy in suffering, and beauty in whatever circumstances we face. We are reminded that no matter what life throws at us "Life Rolls On". We are also reminded to never underestimate ourselves or anyone else. People with or without a disability can do incredible things, and achieve things beyond our wildest imagination. To every child, family and organization that we have met on this journey, please know that you have forever changed our lives. Because of you, we have experienced the love of Christ like never before. Thank you, and God bless.

Introducing Connected Hearts Ministry!!!!

They say it takes a village to raise a child. In our case, it is taking a village to save our child.

Without the generosity of others, there is no way we would be able to bring our little girl home. When we stepped out on this journey, we had no idea where the money would come from. But one by one, friends, family members and total strangers have been stepping up to donate money to help us bring our beautiful daughter home. These donations not only give us financial support, but they also give us hope. The hope of knowing that God is in control, and that He is actively working to bring the funds for our adoption.

We know that many families are in the same position we are. They feel called to adopt, but lack the financial resources on their own. God has used our lack of finances, and your generosity, to encourage us to start Connected Hearts Ministry. Connected Hearts Ministry is a non-profit organization that raises funds for other families who are in the adoption process. Connected Hearts Ministry will focus on raising awareness and funds for orphans who are least likely to be adopted. In many areas, that includes older children, and children with special needs. We will not only help families raise funds for adoptions, but we will also provide them with the education and resources they need for their child to thrive.

In addition to helping finance adoptions, Connected Hearts Ministry will also provide opportunities for people of all ages to get involved in orphan care. We have seen first hand with our own adoption that so many people have hearts to help orphans. We hope to be able to give everyone, no matter how young or old they are, practical ways to make a big difference in the life of an orphan. Please keep us in your prayers as we are seeking God's will and resources for this ministry. We hope that Connected Hearts Ministry will be an expression of our gratitude to God for his faithfulness, and to each of you for your support.

Orphan Summit!

We had the pleasure of attending Summit 9 this past week. It was one of the most incredible experiences of our life! There were people from 28 countries who all had a heart for orphans. It was amazing to hear about the wonderful works that God is doing in orphan care around the globe. We heard fabulous speakers and musicians such as David Platt, Steven Curtis Chapman, Nicole C. Mullens and more. We also had the opportunity to volunteer in several breakout sessions. Although we really enjoyed all of the breakout sessions, two in particular were our favorite. One was Orphan Justice by Johnny Carr. There were several speakers at this session; however, the session was hosted by Anthony and Adeye Salem. Anthony and Adeye have adopted several children with special needs. Update On Our Adoption

We are excited to announce that our dossier has been translated and is currently in China waiting for the final approval! Yippie! Once we get the final approval we will then be given our travel dates! We were told that all of this could still take several months, but we are SO excited to be this much closer! Please pray for God's timing for the approval and travel arrangements.

Help Joseph Find a Home

This past week we found out about a 15 year old boy who desperately needs a family to adopt him. We had heard that he would soon be aging out of his orphanage; however, we didn't know how soon. Today we were informed that he will turn 16 in 4 days. For many children turning 16 is a joyful occasion. However, for Joseph, turning 16 means that he will be kicked out of the orphanage he is currently in, and will never know the love of a family. Our hearts break for this precious child. This week our world has been rocked by tragedies around the globe. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who have been effected by these events. We pray that God will provide comfort and peace during this time of turmoil. A Community with a Heart

" Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear" -Isaiah 65:24

We recently went home for Easter, and were overjoyed by the news we received. We were informed that our friends and family were working together to try to raise $1,000 for our adoption. This news couldn't have come at a better time. The week before Easter we were informed that the money from Show Hope had not yet arrived, and that we needed to pay a minimum of $458 towards our dossier, otherwise our adoption could get held up again. The remainder of the dossier could be paid when the money from Show Hope arrived; however, this particular amount was due immediately. That week we prayed, and we were amazed that God answered our prayer that weekend. The best part was that God had orchestrated this before the money was ever due. Our friends and family had been hard at work and had already raised about half of their goal of $1,000, which allowed us to go ahead and pay off the $458 fee. Our hearts were overjoyed that so many people had been working behind the scenes to help out. As we looked over the list of names of the people who donated, it brought tears to our eyes. Once again, God's timing was perfect, and once again we were amazed at the generosity and love of the body of Christ. To take it a step further, God melted our hearts even more when we saw two $2 donations. We were informed that two little kids gave two dollars each towards our adoption. Two dollars is a lot of money for a child, and yet they willing gave it away to help another child find a home. It reminded us of the widow in Mark 12 who gave two copper coins. "Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others." - Mark 12:43. The widow gave everything she had to the Lord. It is our hope that we will be like the widow, like these two children, and like the people whose names were on this list. That we will always give sacrificially to the work of Christ, counting it not a financial loss, but always a gain for the kingdom of God. Thank you to everyone whose names were on those lists, and to every team leader who helped coordinate this. You not only helped us financially, but you also reminded us that great things happen when we give generously to the Lord and his work. Thank you for making this the most heartfelt Easter we have ever had.

Hope Does Not Disappoint

"And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us." - Romans 5:5

We've mentioned before that this verse has meant so much to us during this adoption process. Our adoption journey has been filled with lots of hiccups, but also a lot of blessings. God has used this process to test our faith, and to remind us that hope does not disappoint. As our time frame continued to get pushed back, we held tighter to this verse, and to God's promise to work all things together for good. Because hope has been the theme of our adoption, we eventually decided to make Hope our daughter's middle name. It is our prayer that God will fill her life with hope. It is because of God's grace, and your encouragement and support, that we know the hope we have will not disappoint us. We also pray that as God continues to fill us with hope, that he will also fill everyone involved in our adoption process with hope as well. We wanted to leave you with some encouraging hope-filled quotes as your go about your weekend. May God fill you to overflowing with his love and mercies, which are new every single day!

Dossier in Route!

This was the picture we took before we sent off our dossier forms.  In total with all of the state seals, notarized documents and all other paperwork, it was 73 pages long!  We not only had to send the originals, but two additional copies with it. In total, we sent off  219 pages to our adoption agency!

As you can imagine, we are relieved that we finally completed our dossier.  It only took traveling 2 hours to have our finger prints taken (for the third time), traveling another 2 hours to have documents State sealed, getting physicals for the second time, going to the police department to have background checks done, getting updated births certificates, an updated marriage license, asking three more friends for reference letters, getting employment verification letters, having a passport photo taken, and notarizing numerous documents. Whew. I think that was it. :)

Our paperwork will be reviewed by our agency, and then sent off for the final approval  Once we get the final approval, we will be set up with our travel arrangements to go and bring our little girl home!  Woohoo!!! Although it has taken a lot of time and effort, in the end it will all be worth it when we have her here! :)

Show Hope

We have been amazed recently at how actively God is working in our adoption. We are excited to say that we received another adoption grant! God's timing is truly incredible.  As our dossier paperwork is completed, that brings with it additional fees. Because of the two grants we recently received, all of our dossier and program 2 fees will be paid for! God is truly working financial miracles to help us bring our little girl home!

We are deeply grateful for the wonderful people at Show Hope who have blessed us with an adoption grant. If you are unfamiliar with Show Hope, this organization was started by singer Steven Curtis Chapman, and his wife Mary Beth. Steven and Mary Beth have adopted multiple times from China, and they have incredible hearts to help orphans. God has used Show Hope over and over again to help families bring home children. We are blessed and humbled to have been chosen to receive a grant from this wonderful organization. Thank you Show Hope for your love for God, and your heart for the orphan! Moving Forward...Slowly

Who knew two tiny feet could hold such a huge place in our hearts!







The picture above is of our little girl's first pair of shoes. We can't wait to finally see her in them! We never imagined that someone we have never met could truly hold such a deep place in our hearts. 

We have a few updates that we wanted to share with everyone:

1. We are excited and grateful to announce that we received a scholarship from Families Outreach. Families Outreach's vision is to "make a difference in the worldwide orphan epidemic, one orphan at a time." We are so humbled by their beautiful hearts for God's children, and we are blessed that their vision is helping us get one step closer to making one less orphan in the world. 2. We recently went to the immigration office and had our biometrics done. Although we had to get up at 5am and travel two hours, we are glad to say that they approved our biometrics, and sent us the immigration paperwork! Yipee! This now allows us to travel another two hours on Monday to get everything state sealed. We are getting pretty use to being in the car!

3. Once we get everything state sealed on Monday, we will mail our dossier out on Tuesday. We are told it usually takes about 3 months for all of this to get approved, and then another 1-2 months for travel arrangements. We saw this video clip today and wanted to pass it along. It is probably the best adoption clip we have ever seen. It is about the Dennehy family who has adopted nine children. Many of their children have disabilites. However, when you watch the clip you do not see disability, only the exuburant joy and love of a family. We hope that this gets your new year off to the right start!
